Getting started
What’s the difference between a place and a spot?
A place is the top level, like Home or Office. Everything inside a place is a spot: a room, a shelf, a box, a drawer, a bag. Spots can sit inside other spots as deep as you like, for example Home › Bags › Gym bag.
Deleting a spot doesn’t delete what’s in it. Its items and spots move up one level.
Which iPhones does Sésame run on?
Any iPhone with iOS 26. It isn’t available for iPad, Mac or Android.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for. Your inventory lives on your iPhone. See the privacy policy for the details.
Tags and labels
Which NFC tags should I buy?
Any NFC sticker or key fob sold as NTAG213, NTAG215 or NTAG216 works. The smallest, NTAG213, is plenty: Sésame writes only a short link to the spot. On metal surfaces, use tags labeled “anti-metal” or “on-metal”, as ordinary ones won’t read there.
How do I link a tag to a spot?
Open the spot, go to Tag & Label, tap Link NFC Tag and hold the top of your iPhone near the tag until it confirms. To read it later, tap the scan button at the top of Home, choose Scan NFC Tag, and hold your iPhone to the tag. The Scan a Tag widget does the same from your Home Screen.
Do I have to rewrite the tag when I add or remove things?
No. The tag holds only a link to the spot. The contents live in the app, so the tag stays right whatever you put in or take out.
I don’t have NFC tags. Can I use something else?
Yes. Open the spot and tap Show QR Label to print or share a label. Scan it with Scan QR Label from the scan button on Home.
Expiry dates and reminders
Sésame read the date wrong. What do I do?
When a date could mean two things, like 03/04/2027, Sésame picks the reading that fits your iPhone’s region and lists the others to choose from. You can always change the date by hand.
Some prints can’t be read by the camera, such as embossed dates or dot-matrix ink on curved cans. For those, type the date. If you’d rather always type dates, turn on Type Expiry Dates in Settings.
I’m not getting reminders.
Check that notifications are allowed for Sésame in the iPhone’s Settings › Notifications. Sésame’s own Settings shows whether reminders are on.
iOS lets an app keep 64 reminders waiting at a time, so Sésame always schedules the soonest 60 and tops the list up each time you open the app.
A barcode wasn’t found.
Barcodes are looked up in the free Open Food Facts databases, which are built by volunteers and don’t know every product. Fill in the details yourself, or add the product to Open Food Facts so it’s there for everyone next time.
Barcodes never contain the expiry date, so that’s always read from the pack or typed in.
AI fill-in
Do I need an API key?
No. Without one, Sésame fills in what it can on your iPhone: the largest text on the item and roughly what kind of thing it is. A key lets Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini read the photo, which is much more accurate, especially for brands, amounts and dates.
Where do I get a key, and what does it cost?
Create one with the provider you prefer: Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT) or Google AI Studio (Gemini). Then paste it into Sésame’s Settings. A ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini app subscription can’t be used for this; it has to be an API key.
The provider bills you directly for what you use, at their API prices. Each photo is a single small request. Sésame doesn’t charge for it or take a cut.
What gets sent, and is my key safe?
Only the photo you chose, today’s date, and whether the item is kept in the fridge or freezer. It goes straight from your iPhone to the provider. Your key is stored in the iOS Keychain and never sent to us. Remove it in Settings whenever you like.
Your data
How do I move my inventory to a new iPhone?
Your inventory comes along with the rest of your iPhone when you set up the new one from an iCloud backup, a computer backup, or with Quick Start. Sésame doesn’t sync between devices on its own.
Can my household share one inventory?
Not yet. Everything stays on one iPhone for now. If shared places would help you, tell us. It helps decide what comes next.
My widgets are empty.
Open Sésame once after installing or updating it. The widgets show a summary the app saves whenever something changes, so they fill in after the first save.
